Hidden old NATO base in Trabzon is hardly visible in the green field.

Hidden NATO Base in Trabzon to Open for Tourism

The little-known NATO base located in Trabzon’s Boztepe district is set to become a new tourist destination.

This former military installation, used by American soldiers in the 1980s to counter the Russian threat, is situated in the Maçka district’s Ortaköy neighborhood. After serving as a munitions depot, the base was completely abandoned in 2010.

Now, the Trabzon NATO base, with its military dormitories, football field, training areas, and eight soundproof hangars, is poised for a transformation.

Maçka Municipality has included the site in a project aimed at developing new tourism destinations.

Local officials in Trabzon recently conducted an on-site inspection of the NATO base to assess its potential for conversion into a tourist attraction. They explored ways to repurpose the former military site, aiming to transform it into a unique destination for visitors.

Maçka Mayor Koray Koçhan emphasized the project’s readiness, stating, “We have rolled up our sleeves to repurpose the NATO base for tourism as soon as possible.”

The project aims to leverage the base’s historical and unique attributes to attract tourists and provide a new source of revenue and cultural enrichment for the area.

The plan to open this hidden NATO base for tourism marks an exciting development for Trabzon, promising to turn a piece of Cold War history into a vibrant destination for travelers.
