Copa America 2024: Atlanta Opens, Miami Hosts Final

The 2024 Copa America, a pinnacle of South American football, is gearing up for an exciting tournament with Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium hosting the opening match on June 20, 2024, and Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium set to host the final on July 14.

This announcement marks a significant moment in the history of the tournament, as it returns to the United States following the successful 2016 Copa Centenario.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium, known for its 71,000 capacity and history of hosting major events like Super Bowl LIII and international soccer matches, is poised to kick off the tournament in grand style. Meanwhile, Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, a versatile venue for events like the Miami Dolphins games and Miami Open tennis tournament, is preparing to host the final match, bringing the excitement of South American football to the vibrant city of Miami.

Dan Corso, president of the Atlanta Sports Council, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, highlighting the region’s elevated soccer profile. “Hosting the Opening Match of this prestigious tournament is an incredible achievement by everyone involved,” Corso said, acknowledging the partnership with Arthur M. Blank Sports + Entertainment and the City of Atlanta.

Tom Garfinkel, vice chairman, president, and CEO of the Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium, also shared his excitement about hosting the final. “As a global entertainment destination, we strive to reflect the dynamic and international culture of Miami,” Garfinkel stated, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders.

The rest of the tournament venues are yet to be officially announced, but reports suggest that Los Angeles and Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium may host the semifinals, with other cities like Dallas and Orlando also expected to be part of the event.

Argentina, the defending Copa América and World Cup champion, will be among the top teams to watch. The U.S., stepping in as host after Ecuador withdrew, looks to replicate the success of the 2016 tournament, which saw Chile triumph over Argentina in the final.

This tournament not only celebrates the best of South American football but also strengthens the sport’s growing presence in North America, promising a blend of thrilling matches and cultural exchange.
