American Airlines to Install Starlink Satellite Wi-Fi on 500-Plus Narrowbody Aircraft

American Airlines has announced plans to install Starlink satellite Wi-Fi across more than 500 narrowbody aircraft, with the rollout set to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

The US carrier will upgrade its entire Airbus narrowbody fleet, including new A321XLR and A321neo deliveries, bringing gigabit-capable broadband to domestic and short-haul international routes.

Starlink, operated by SpaceX, uses a low Earth orbit satellite constellation to deliver broadband speeds capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, and real-time collaboration tools. Its Aero Terminal antenna can support connectivity of up to 1 Gbps per aircraft.

The system is positioned as a significant upgrade over conventional inflight Wi-Fi, which has long been criticised for slow speeds, high latency, and unreliable connections, particularly on narrowbody jets serving shorter domestic routes.

“As a premium global airline, we are continuously seeking out world-class partners like Starlink to deliver what our customers need and want,” said Heather Garboden, Chief Customer Officer at American Airlines. “The addition of Starlink solidifies American as a leading airline in keeping passengers connected in flight.”

Garboden added that the upgrade would remove the need for passengers to download documents before boarding or manage around lag times during flights. “Starlink’s high speed and low latency make the Wi-Fi more reliable, which matters when customers are trying to load pages, join real-time collaboration tools or stay connected consistently throughout a flight,” she said.

SpaceX confirmed the partnership and said the service would operate from gate to gate. “We are proud to bring Starlink on board American Airlines, delivering fast and reliable internet to passengers and crew,” said Jason Fritch, Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales at SpaceX. “Whether traveling for leisure or business, Starlink enables a fully connected experience gate to gate, making every flight smoother and more enjoyable.”

The announcement positions American Airlines alongside a growing number of carriers investing in next-generation connectivity. Starlink has expanded its aviation partnerships rapidly in recent years, with airline customers across commercial, regional, and charter operations adopting its Aero product.

For American, the Starlink rollout forms part of a broader push to modernise the onboard experience on its narrowbody fleet, which operates the majority of the airline’s domestic network. The A321XLR, which American has on order, is designed for extended narrowbody range and will enter service on thinner transatlantic routes, meaning Starlink coverage will extend beyond purely domestic flying.

Installation is scheduled to begin in Q1 2027, though American has not disclosed a timeline for fleet-wide completion or announced pricing details for passenger access.
