Tourism Exchange Japan announces the March 2026 launch of the Japan Travel Trade Portal, a new B2B sales platform designed to directly connect international travel professionals with Japanese accommodations and experiences.
The digital system links global buyers to more than 20,000 properties through four major Connected Booking Systems in Japan, offering real-time availability, instant confirmations, and streamlined invoicing. The initiative targets long-standing barriers that have limited access to regional destinations, including language, distribution, and operational challenges.
The platform initially focuses on high-demand ryokans in major onsen towns and popular sightseeing areas, while opening global sales channels for lesser-known regions such as the Kii Peninsula and Niigata Prefecture. Multilingual access in English, French, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese enables international agents to book properties that previously operated only in Japanese. A standardized 13% commission structure and full booking management tools aim to improve efficiency and profitability for travel companies.
Japan’s regional destinations have increasingly attracted travelers seeking authentic experiences away from high-volume tourism hubs such as Tokyo and Kyoto. However, limited international distribution and language barriers have often made these areas difficult to sell in global markets. The Japan Travel Trade Portal is designed to address this gap by centralizing inventory, pricing, and communications in a single system accessible to overseas partners.
Key features include live inventory access, direct invoicing between suppliers and travel companies, and built-in support for special requirements such as vegan and vegetarian diets and accessibility needs. Automatic translation tools allow properties that operate exclusively in Japanese to become bookable by international agents without manual intervention. The platform also integrates cancellation management and billing processes to simplify operations for both buyers and suppliers.
Beyond accommodations, the portal will progressively expand to include activities and experience programs, creating a more comprehensive product offering for travel trade partners. Future regional additions are set to include Hokuriku, the Mt. Fuji area, Nagano, the Setouchi region, Kyushu, Okinawa, and other destinations that highlight Japan’s geographic and cultural diversity.
By enabling smaller and remote properties to reach international markets, the initiative aims to support a more balanced tourism economy across the country. Increased visibility for rural regions could help distribute visitor flows more evenly throughout the year, easing pressure on urban hotspots while strengthening local businesses and communities.
The launch reflects wider efforts within Japan’s tourism sector to modernize distribution and adapt to evolving global travel demand. As travelers increasingly seek immersive cultural experiences and less crowded destinations, improved access to regional accommodations is seen as a critical step in sustaining long-term growth.
With no comparable B2B system currently offering this level of connectivity across Japan’s accommodation sector, the Japan Travel Trade Portal represents a significant shift in how international travel professionals source and book Japanese travel products. Its rollout in March 2026 is expected to reshape access to the country’s regional tourism landscape.
