Visitors heading to Maui are being advised that the Iao Valley State Monument has closed for nearly 2 months while improvement works take place at one of the island’s best-known natural attractions.
The closure began on April 27 and will remain in place until June 26, according to the Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resources. The state says crews will carry out upgrades including higher safety railings, anti-climb fencing and repainting bridge railings.
Iao Valley State Monument is a popular stop for both residents and tourists, known for its lush landscape and cultural significance. The temporary shutdown may affect travel plans for visitors hoping to include the site in Maui itineraries during the spring and early summer period.
Officials said the works are designed to improve visitor safety while helping preserve the area for future generations.
“We understand the importance of Iao Valley to the community and visitors alike, and we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we complete these necessary improvements to malama [preserve] this special place,” said Michael Kahula, State Parks Maui district superintendent.
The monument is expected to reopen on June 26, subject to the completion of planned works.
