When winter settles over the UK and daylight feels in short supply, many travellers look for a quick escape to warmth and blue skies. Fresh analysis of airline schedules now shows exactly where British holidaymakers are heading for winter sun this Christmas.
According to aviation data provider OAG, the clear winner for UK residents seeking sunshine between 20 December 2025 and 4 January 2026 is the Canary Islands, which receives more flights than all other warm-weather destinations by a wide margin. The study examines scheduled services from UK airports to popular winter-sun locations and ranks them by total flight frequency over the festive period.
Canary Islands Dominate UK Winter-Sun Travel
The data confirms that the Canary Islands remain the first choice for British travellers chasing December warmth. Across the holiday window, there are 3,685 scheduled flights from the UK to the Canaries, more than three times the volume to the second-placed destination, the United Arab Emirates, which records 1,006 flights. Morocco follows with 952 flights, ahead of Egypt on 796 and Cyprus with 348.
Further down the top 10, Portugal clocks 245 flights, while long-haul favourites also make the list: Barbados with 240 flights, Mexico with 146, and Cape Verde with 138. The United States rounds out the ranking with 128 flights linked to winter-sun travel. Together, the figures illustrate a strong preference for destinations that combine reliable winter temperatures with well-established air links from the UK.
Airport Hotspots and Emerging Patterns
At airport level, Tenerife Sur stands out within the Canary Islands as the single busiest winter-sun hub. OAG’s figures show Tenerife Sur (TFS) handling 1,495 flights from UK airports in the period studied. Lanzarote (ACE) follows with 1,003 flights, while Gran Canaria (LPA) and Fuerteventura (FUE) add 628 and 559 flights respectively. These numbers underline how firmly the Canaries are embedded in British holiday habits at Christmas.
On the UK side, Manchester Airport emerges as the leading departure point for sunshine breaks in the archipelago, with 523 flights to the Canary Islands over the festive window. London Gatwick comes next with 461 flights, reflecting its role as a major base for leisure carriers. For travellers in northern England and the Midlands, this concentration offers a wide choice of dates, times and airlines when planning end-of-year getaways.
The analysis also highlights the continued draw of the Middle East and North Africa. Dubai International (DXB) remains the most popular long-haul choice, with 776 flights scheduled from the UK, making it the only non-European destination among the very top winter-sun airports. In North Africa, Marrakech (RAK) leads with 460 flights, followed closely by Hurghada (HRG) on 278, Sharm El-Sheikh (SSH) on 276 and Agadir (AGA) on 258. These totals suggest that many travellers are favouring medium-haul journeys that balance flying time, cost and warmer weather.
Funchal (FNC) in Madeira also features prominently with 245 flights, signalling ongoing interest in the Portuguese island’s mild climate and dramatic Atlantic scenery. While it receives fewer flights than the main Canary gateways, its inclusion in the top group underlines its appeal as a quieter alternative for those seeking walking trails, coastal views and a gentler pace during the festive period.

For travellers considering their own winter-sun escape, the findings provide a snapshot of demand and availability. High frequencies to the Canary Islands, Dubai, Morocco and Egypt indicate strong competition and generally broad choice on routes that combine beach time, family-friendly resorts and, in many cases, familiar package offerings. At the same time, destinations such as Barbados, Mexico and Cape Verde show that a significant number of UK travellers are also willing to opt for long-haul or emerging locations over Christmas.
As airlines adjust their schedules to meet seasonal demand, the pattern revealed by OAG’s data suggests that the hunt for December sunshine still follows established paths, even as new destinations gradually gain ground. For now, UK holidaymakers continue to look south and west for reliable warmth, with the Canary Islands maintaining a firm hold on the title of Britain’s favourite place to escape the winter chill.
