Egyptair takes delivery of its first Airbus A350-900

Egyptair has taken delivery of its first Airbus A350-900 aircraft, marking a major step in the airline’s long-haul fleet modernisation and making it the launch operator for the type in North Africa.

The aircraft was handed over in Toulouse on 09 February 2026 as part of an order for 16 A350-900 jets that will support network expansion from the carrier’s Cairo hub.

The new widebody aircraft will be used on nonstop long-haul routes to key destinations, including the US West Coast and North Asia. The delivery strengthens Egyptair’s shift toward more fuel-efficient aircraft as the airline prepares to grow intercontinental services while reducing operating costs and emissions.

The A350-900 joins Egyptair’s existing Airbus fleet, which includes eight A320neo aircraft, seven A321neo aircraft and 11 A330 Family aircraft, among them five A330-200P2F freighters. The new jets are positioned as the backbone of the airline’s future long-haul operations, offering extended range and improved passenger comfort.

Configured in two classes, the aircraft features 30 Business Class suites with direct aisle access and 310 Economy Class seats. The cabin uses Airbus’ latest-generation Airspace design, aimed at improving the long-haul experience through wider seats, higher ceilings, enhanced lighting and quieter interiors for both passengers and crew.

The A350-900 is designed to fly up to 9,700 nautical miles, or about 18,000 kilometres, nonstop. This range allows Egyptair to operate ultra-long routes directly from Cairo without refuelling stops, opening new city pairs that were previously difficult to serve efficiently.

The aircraft incorporates advanced aerodynamics, lightweight composite materials and new-generation Rolls-Royce engines. Together, these technologies deliver around a 25% reduction in fuel burn, operating costs and carbon dioxide emissions compared with earlier widebody aircraft types.

Beyond efficiency, the A350 programme also supports the aviation industry’s sustainability transition. The aircraft is already capable of operating with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel, with plans for full 100% SAF compatibility across Airbus aircraft by 2030.

Egyptair’s decision to invest in the A350 reflects a broader industry trend toward modern, long-range jets that balance passenger comfort with environmental performance. Airlines worldwide are increasingly prioritising aircraft that can serve distant markets profitably while meeting tightening emissions expectations.

At the end of January 2026, the A350 Family had secured more than 1,500 orders from 67 customers globally, underlining strong demand for next-generation widebody aircraft as long-haul travel continues to recover and expand.

With its first A350 now in service, Egyptair is positioning Cairo as an even more significant global transit hub, connecting Africa, the Middle East, Asia and North America with longer nonstop routes and a modernised passenger experience.
