Wizz Air wins US flight permit and plans World Cup charter trips

Wizz Air UK has received regulatory approval to operate flights between the United Kingdom and the United States, allowing the airline to launch charter services across the Atlantic ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The authorization follows months of regulatory coordination, operational planning, and technical reviews required to obtain permits for transatlantic operations. The airline says it currently has no plans to launch scheduled commercial flights to the United States.

The approval allows Wizz Air UK to operate tailored charter flights for European football teams and supporters travelling to the World Cup in the United States, as well as for tour operators organizing group travel. Charter enquiries for summer travel are now open as the airline prepares to meet expected demand linked to the tournament.

The airline said the new authorization represents a major milestone in its development and provides an opportunity to expand its operational reach beyond its traditional European network. Transatlantic permissions are complex to obtain and require airlines to meet strict regulatory, safety, and operational requirements set by aviation authorities.

“This is a proud and exciting day for everyone at our airline,” said Yvonne Moynihan, Managing Director of Wizz Air UK. “Receiving approval to operate between the UK and the United States is a huge milestone for our company. It opens the door to incredible opportunities, particularly for European football teams and supporters travelling across the Atlantic this summer. We are ready to deliver exceptional charter experiences and bring fans closer to the action in the United States.”

The airline expects strong interest from football teams participating in the World Cup and from fan groups planning travel to matches in the United States. Charter packages are designed to offer flexible travel arrangements for large groups, including teams, officials, and supporters travelling together.

Beyond football travel, Wizz Air said the charter flights will also be available to corporate groups, sports organizations, tour operators, and private travellers seeking dedicated transatlantic transport. Charter operations typically involve flights arranged specifically for a group rather than being sold as individual tickets through an airline’s scheduled network.

“This achievement reflects the dedication and professionalism of our entire team,” added Yvonne Moynihan. “We are excited to welcome passengers on board and to celebrate this new chapter as we expand our reach across the Atlantic.”

The airline said the approval highlights its ambition to explore new markets while maintaining its focus on tailored charter operations. While scheduled low-cost transatlantic services are not currently planned, the permit gives Wizz Air UK the flexibility to operate flights between the UK and the United States when charter demand arises.
