American Airlines Cuts Flights as Iran War Drives Up Fuel Costs

American Airlines is temporarily cutting six domestic routes in August and September as rising jet fuel costs linked to the ongoing Iran war continue to pressure airline operations.

The carrier confirmed the schedule adjustments to CBS News on Wednesday, saying the affected routes are being removed temporarily and will not be suspended permanently. The airline said customers booked on impacted flights will either be rebooked or offered refunds.

The routes affected are:

  • Los Angeles to Cleveland
  • Los Angeles to Columbus
  • Los Angeles to Pittsburgh
  • Los Angeles to Washington Dulles
  • Charlotte to Ontario
  • Charlotte to Sacramento

“American is not suspending any routes indefinitely as part of this adjustment,” an airline spokesperson said in a statement.

Jet fuel typically accounts for 25% to 30% of an airline’s operating costs, according to industry analysts. Airlines around the world have faced higher fuel prices after the Iran war disrupted global oil supplies and increased pressure on energy markets.

American Airlines is one of several major carriers adjusting operations to offset rising costs. Some airlines have increased ticket prices, added fuel surcharges or reduced less profitable routes.

Other airlines have also introduced cost-cutting measures. Delta Air Lines recently increased baggage fees, citing what it described as “evolving global conditions.” European carriers including KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Lufthansa have also announced route reductions linked to rising jet fuel costs.

Industry groups have warned that continued instability in global energy markets could lead to further airfare increases and additional flight cuts during the peak summer travel season.
