Accommodation providers in Germany recorded 56.7 million overnight stays by domestic and international guests in July 2025, according to preliminary data released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
The figure represents a 1.2% decrease compared with July 2024.
Both domestic and international demand contributed to the decline. Overnight stays by domestic guests fell by 1.1% year-on-year to 46.2 million, while international guest nights dropped 1.3% to 10.5 million. The modest decrease follows strong demand in recent years, reflecting a stabilization of visitor numbers at a high level.
Performance in First Seven Months
From January to July 2025, German accommodation providers registered 279.9 million overnight stays. This total was only slightly below the record 280.4 million guest nights reported in the same period of 2024, representing a decline of 0.2%. Destatis noted that the figures confirm a continuation of robust demand for tourism services despite the slight mid-summer dip.
The data covers all accommodation establishments with at least 10 beds or 10 pitches at campsites, including hotels, guesthouses, holiday rentals and other lodging facilities. Destatis said the July decline was relatively minor compared with the strong overall performance of the first half of the year.
Tourism Sector Outlook
Industry analysts said the figures highlight the resilience of Germany’s tourism market, which has benefited from strong domestic travel demand and a steady recovery of international arrivals. Despite the decline in July, overnight stays remain near record levels, providing a positive outlook for the remainder of the year.
Destatis continues to monitor developments closely as the tourism industry approaches the autumn travel season. Officials emphasized that year-to-date performance reflects sustained interest in Germany’s diverse destinations, including urban centers, cultural attractions, and leisure regions.
With nearly 280 million overnight stays in the first seven months of 2025, Germany remains one of Europe’s leading tourism markets. The near-record demand underscores the importance of the sector to the country’s economy and employment, particularly in regions dependent on both domestic and foreign visitors.
