India’s IndiGo appoints IATA chief Willie Walsh as new CEO

Indian low-cost airline IndiGo has appointed International Air Transport Association or IATA’s chief Willie Walsh, one of the industry’s highest-profile figures, as chief executive.

Walsh’s term at IATA ends on 31 July and he is expected to join IndiGo by 3 August at the latest, the airline announced in a statement.

“Walsh’s experience in managing large scale airline operations and navigating complex market dynamics make him ideally suited to strengthen and lead IndiGo,” chairman Vikram Singh Mehta said.

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead IndiGo. The airline has a strong foundation, a compelling vision and an exceptional reputation. What stands out most to me are its people, their passion, professionalism and commitment. The aviation landscape is evolving rapidly, and IndiGo is well-positioned to be at the forefront of this change,” said Walsh, reacting to the appointment.

IndiGo had cancelled over 4,500 flights last December

Walsh is succeeding Peter Elbers who resigned from the airline on 10 March with immediate effect, Airline founder & MD Rahul Bhatia became the interim CEO.

Elbers’ resignation was widely seen as being linked to a recent crisis in December where the airline was forced to cancel about 4,500 flights over three days, the largest disruption in its 20-year history and leaving thousands of passengers stranded at airports across India during a busy travel season.

The disruption followed the introduction of new pilot duty and rest regulations in India designed to reduce fatigue among flight crew. The airline later acknowledged it had misjudged how many pilots it would need once the rules came into force. Regulators later reprimanded several senior executives, including Elbers, citing “inadequate overall oversight of flight operations and crisis management”.

The carrier has about 60% market share in India, which is the world’s fastest-growing aviation market. It flies more than 2,000 flights a day.

Who is Willie Walsh?

Walsh took on the role as IATA chief in April 2021, becoming the eighth person to do so. A citizen of Ireland, Walsh was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1961.

Walsh had his start as a cadet pilot with Aer Lingus in 1979. He rose through the ranks to become the Chief Executive of the national flag carrier of Ireland in 2001. Four years later, he was appointed Chief Executive of British Airways.

Walsh led British Airways through the 2008-09 global financial crisis. He also established a transatlantic joint business venture with Iberia, Finnair and American Airlines, and oversaw the 2011 merger of BA and Iberia under a newly established parent company, International Airlines Group (IAG).  Since its inception till September 2020, Walsh led IAG.

At IATA, he focused on supporting the industry as it battled the Covid-19 crisis, especially the global lockdowns and related restrictions. He also devoted his energies to the aviation industry’s commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Good track record in handling crisis

His track record in crisis management and cost control is seen as highly relevant to IndiGo’s current challenges. Walsh inherits an airline aiming to expand long-haul operations while facing high fuel prices, airspace closures, and currency pressures.

Walsh’s extensive global aviation experience is seen as key to guiding India’s largest airline through recovery and international expansion.

Analysts say his success will hinge on executing international expansion, managing aircraft inductions like the A350, and building organisational resilience. Industry leaders see his appointment as a statement of IndiGo’s global ambitions and a bid to strengthen its competitive edge in a rapidly evolving market.
