Air Cambodia orders up to 20 Boeing 737 MAX jets to expand regional network

Air Cambodia has announced its largest single-aisle aircraft order to date, confirming plans to acquire up to 20 Boeing 737 MAX jets as it looks to expand its regional network across Asia. The agreement, unveiled at the Singapore Airshow, includes a firm order for 10 737-8 aircraft and opportunities for a further 10, with the deal finalised in December 2025.

The order marks Air Cambodia’s first purchase of Boeing aircraft and signals a major fleet renewal for the Southeast Asian carrier. Deliveries will support the airline’s strategy to grow capacity on high-demand routes and strengthen air links between Cambodia and destinations across North and Southeast Asia.

With the 737 MAX, Air Cambodia plans to modernise its operations as air travel plays a growing role in connecting cities, economies and tourism markets across the region. The airline will deploy the 737-8 on routes where demand is rising, using the aircraft’s longer range and improved efficiency to operate nonstop services to markets that were previously out of reach.

“The 737-8 gives Air Cambodia the ideal combination of range, capacity and fuel efficiency to support our next phase of growth,” said Dr. David Zhan, CEO. “This investment – Air Cambodia’s largest narrowbody purchase – will let us launch direct services to important markets across North and Southeast Asia, and offer competitively priced travel for passengers, while creating local jobs and training opportunities that strengthen our communities.”

The Boeing 737-8 can carry up to 178 passengers in a two-class configuration and has a range of up to 3,500 nautical miles (6,480 km). For travellers, this translates into the potential for more nonstop flights, fewer connections and improved onboard comfort on medium-haul journeys across Asia.

Boeing says the aircraft delivers a 20% reduction in fuel use and emissions compared with the planes it replaces, lowering operating costs for airlines while supporting environmental targets. These savings are often critical in enabling airlines to keep fares competitive on regional routes, particularly in price-sensitive markets.

“We are proud to welcome Air Cambodia as our newest 737 MAX customer and look forward to partnering with them to introduce the versatile and reliable 737-8 to the Kingdom of Cambodia,” said Brad McMullen, senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing. “We are committed to supporting the growth of aviation in Cambodia and throughout the region as Air Cambodia strengthens ties across Asia with these fuel-efficient airplanes.”

Air Cambodia currently operates a fleet of six single-aisle and regional jets, serving domestic routes and international destinations including Vietnam, India, Thailand, China, Japan and Hong Kong. The new aircraft will allow the airline to scale up operations while maintaining flexibility as travel demand evolves.

The order also reflects wider trends in Southeast Asian aviation. Boeing forecasts that carriers in the region will require nearly 5,000 new aircraft over the next 20 years, with single-aisle jets accounting for more than 80% of deliveries. For passengers, that growth is likely to mean denser route networks, increased competition and a steady expansion of direct services linking emerging cities with established hubs.
