Techo International Airport officially opened on 9 September 2025, marking Cambodia’s most significant aviation milestone to date.
Located south of Phnom Penh, the new airport begins operations with a capacity to serve 13 million passengers annually in its first phase. Developed by Cambodia Airport Investment Co., Ltd. (CAIC), a joint venture between the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC) and the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), the facility is expected to expand the country’s connectivity for travel, trade, and investment.
The launch was marked by the arrival of the first commercial flight operated by Air Cambodia, greeted with a traditional water salute. The opening coincides with OCIC’s 25th anniversary, highlighting the conglomerate’s role in transforming Cambodia’s infrastructure over the past two decades. The airport positions Phnom Penh as an emerging aviation hub in Southeast Asia.
Modern Infrastructure and Global Partnerships
Techo International Airport is one of the largest in the world by land area. Its terminal was designed by UK-based Foster + Partners and features Khmer-inspired bamboo-patterned domes. At the center of the terminal stands a nine-meter Buddha statue in the Abhayamudra pose, symbolizing peace and protection for travelers.
CAIC appointed several international partners to operate key services at the airport. Vinci Airports manages operations, Lagardère Travel Retail oversees retail activities, Newrest handles catering, and Singapore Airlines Engineering Company (SIAEC) is responsible for aircraft maintenance. These collaborations aim to deliver international standards and enable the airport to gradually expand its long-haul routes.
“Welcoming the first passengers at Techo International Airport is a defining moment,” said Pung Kheav Se, Chairman of OCIC and CAIC. “It creates new opportunities for Cambodia — for visitors, businesses, and investors — and marks the beginning of a new chapter for our country.”
OCIC, which holds the majority share in CAIC, has built over 10,000 homes and delivered key infrastructure projects including bridges, roads, and flyovers. The Techo International Airport is the group’s most ambitious project, aiming to elevate Cambodia’s profile in global air transport networks.
