American Airlines Adds A321XLR Jet with Premium Suites

American Airlines will debut its new Airbus A321XLR aircraft on Dec. 18, introducing upgraded premium cabins and lie-flat Flagship Suite® seats on its cross-country routes.

Tickets for the inaugural flight, operating as Flight 3 from New York (JFK) to Los Angeles (LAX), are now available on American’s website and mobile app.

The U.S. carrier received its first A321XLR from Airbus’ Hamburg, Germany, assembly line on Oct. 22, becoming the first airline in the United States to operate the model. The aircraft features a three-cabin configuration with 20 Flagship Suite® seats, 12 Premium Economy seats and 123 Main Cabin seats, designed to enhance comfort and privacy for long-haul and domestic travelers alike.

New aircraft set to redefine American’s premium experience

“Designed for long journeys with comfort and style at the forefront, American is thrilled to be the first U.S. airline to operate the A321XLR,” said Heather Garboden, Chief Customer Officer at American Airlines. “Whether customers are traveling from coast to coast or across the ocean, American’s newest aircraft demonstrates our commitment to providing a premium travel experience.”

The A321XLR will initially operate on U.S. transcontinental routes before expanding to international destinations in the first half of 2026. Each Flagship Suite® includes a privacy door, personal storage, wireless charging, a cocktail tray and a reading light. Premium Economy seats offer added legroom, a winged headrest, calf and footrests, and enhanced dining service.

Enhanced comfort and onboard amenities

As part of its Flagship Suite® service, American will offer passengers priority check-in, security, boarding and baggage handling, along with access to the Greenwich Lounge™ at JFK. The lounge features elevated dining and signature cocktails in a quiet, refined setting.

Premium Economy travelers will enjoy upgraded dining with hot entrees, wireless charging ports and additional comfort items, including an Ostrichpillow® lumbar pillow and crepe weave blanket. American says the new aircraft marks a milestone in modernizing its fleet and enhancing customer experience across both domestic and international operations.
