American Airlines makes checked bags easier with new digital tools and lower online fees

American Airlines has introduced a series of digital upgrades that allow customers to manage checked luggage earlier in the booking process while offering lower online fees for some baggage purchases. The new tools, rolled out across the airline’s website and mobile app in recent weeks, expand self-service options including prepaid bags, automatic refunds, same-day changes, and digital redemption of travel credits.

The airline is also adjusting airport baggage fees for tickets booked on or after Feb. 18, raising the second checked bag fee to $50 on domestic and short-haul international routes while offering a $5 discount for customers who prepay online, keeping the digital rate at $45. There are no changes to fees for the first checked bag, and complimentary baggage benefits remain for elite loyalty members, most co-branded credit cardholders, premium cabin passengers, and active-duty U.S. military personnel.

“Any time we can make the travel experience streamlined and more convenient before arriving at the airport is a win for our customers,” said Heather Garboden, Chief Customer Officer. “We continue to update our digital channels to provide our customers with even more self-service options.”

Customers can now add up to three checked bags during flight booking rather than waiting until check-in. Those who prepay for baggage online are able to make confirmed same-day flight changes without speaking to an agent, a shift designed to create a more consistent and transparent experience.

The airline has also automated refunds for eligible prepaid baggage purchases when customers change or cancel their trips or purchase Instant Upgrades. Refunds are issued either as travel credits or back to the original form of payment, depending on the transaction.

Another new feature allows travellers to use travel credits to purchase standalone checked bags online, expanding the airline’s digital payment flexibility and paving the way for broader credit use across additional services.

For customers flying in premium cabins, most are now able to add their checked bags digitally ahead of departure, further reducing the need for in-person assistance at airports.

The updates are paired with expanded airport infrastructure aimed at speeding up bag drop. Passengers who prepay online can scan their boarding passes at kiosks to print Express Bag Tags and proceed directly to baggage drop areas. Over the past year, American has installed about 100 new bag kiosks across 16 airports.

The revised second-bag fee applies to domestic routes including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as flights to Canada and short-haul international destinations. Customers who pay at the airport will now face the higher $50 charge, reinforcing the airline’s push toward digital prepayment.

American said the combination of earlier bag purchases, automated refunds, expanded self-service tools, and upgraded kiosks is designed to reduce airport congestion and give customers greater control over their travel experience.
