Frontier Airlines Plane Strikes and Kills Pedestrian on Denver Airport Runway, Forcing Evacuation of 231 Passengers

A Frontier Airlines jet struck and killed a person who had entered the runway at Denver International Airport during takeoff on Friday night, triggering an engine fire and forcing the emergency evacuation of all 231 people on board.

Frontier Flight 4345, an Airbus A321 bound for Los Angeles International Airport, was accelerating along Runway 17L when it struck the individual at approximately 11:19 p.m. local time on 8 May 2026, according to a statement from Denver International Airport.

“Tower, Frontier 4345, we’re stopping on the runway. We just hit somebody. We have an engine fire,” the pilot reported to air traffic control, according to audio published by ATC.com. The crew confirmed seconds later: “We’ve got smoke on the aircraft. We’re gonna evacuate on the runway.”

The person was at least partially consumed by one of the aircraft’s engines, an official confirmed, causing a brief engine fire that was extinguished by the Denver Fire Department. Smoke filled the cabin, prompting pilots to abort takeoff and initiate an emergency evacuation.

Passengers descended onto the runway via emergency slides. Emergency crews bused all 231 occupants to the terminal. At least one passenger sustained a minor injury during the evacuation. All those on board were evaluated as standard procedure following an emergency egress.

Security breach under investigation

Airport officials confirmed the individual had jumped the perimeter fence to gain access to the airfield. The person is not believed to have been an airport employee and had not been identified by Saturday morning, authorities said.

A source briefed on the incident told ABC News that security personnel were inspecting the east perimeter fence for gaps on Saturday morning. The person struck did not appear to be connected to work being carried out on an adjacent runway at the time.

CNN reported that the airport fenceline was subsequently examined and found to be intact. Runway 17L remained closed pending the investigation but was expected to reopen during the day on Saturday.

Airport and airline response

Denver International Airport confirmed it had notified the National Transportation Safety Board, which will lead the inquiry into the security breach and the collision.

“We are investigating this incident and gathering more information in coordination with the airport and other safety authorities,” Frontier Airlines said in a statement. “We are deeply saddened by this event.”

The airport said in a post on X: “Frontier Flight 4345 reported striking a pedestrian during takeoff at DEN at approximately 11:19 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026. There was a brief engine fire that was promptly extinguished by the Denver Fire Dept. Emergency crews responded to the scene and bussed passengers to the terminal. 231 souls were on board. Emergency response and investigation are ongoing.”

Passenger Jose Cervantes, speaking to CNN affiliate KCNC, described the moment the aircraft struck the individual. “I looked to my right and I just see the right wing just on fire,” Cervantes said. “The aircraft lands back down and they kind of swivel side to side and then they stop, shut it off right away, and then the cabin starts to fill up with smoke.”

Denver International Airport said it remained fully operational. Travellers were advised to check for possible delays caused by the runway closure.
