Turkish Airlines brings Istanbul-style lounge experience to Edinburgh

Turkish Airlines has opened its first European lounge abroad at Edinburgh Airport, marking a milestone for the carrier’s international ground offering and expanding premium facilities for travellers departing Scotland.

The lounge officially opened on 10 December at Edinburgh International Airport and becomes the airline’s eighth lounge outside of Türkiye, bringing elements of its flagship Istanbul lounge experience to the UK. The move strengthens Turkish Airlines’ presence in Europe and supports Edinburgh Airport’s role as an international gateway.

The new lounge is located airside on Level 2 near gate 16 and is open to Turkish Airlines Business Class passengers, eligible Miles&Smiles members and selected cardholders, as well as guests with a paid lounge membership. It opens as the airline continues to operate 10 weekly flights between Edinburgh and Istanbul, offering onward connections to destinations across its global network. The facility is designed to provide a premium pre-flight experience while maintaining consistency with the airline’s lounges worldwide.

First European lounge abroad for Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines said the Edinburgh opening is its first lounge located in Europe outside of its home country, aside from its major hub lounges in Istanbul. The airline hosted a celebratory event at Edinburgh International Airport on 10 December to mark the launch, attended by representatives from the airline and the airport.

The lounge spans 673m² and has capacity for 149 guests at any one time. Facilities include an open buffet with a Turkish pide service available at lunch and dinner, a relaxation area equipped with televisions and Wi-Fi, and two dedicated prayer rooms. Additional amenities include a baby care room, flight information screens and an accessible restroom for guests with reduced mobility.

Turkish Airlines Chief Operations Officer M. Akif Konar said: “The opening of our new Turkish Airlines Lounge at Edinburgh Airport marks an important milestone for our airline. As our first abroad lounge in Europe and our eighth outside of Türkiye, this investment demonstrates our deep commitment to our European operations where we already possess a strong presence as the best airline* of the continent. Looking ahead, we will continue to build on our presence in the region and bringing our award-winning hospitality closer to travellers here.”

The airline has positioned the lounge as a scaled-down version of its five-star lounge concept in Istanbul, aiming to deliver a seamless experience for passengers transferring between its network destinations. Turkish Airlines flies to 356 destinations in 132 countries, and the Edinburgh service allows Scottish travellers to connect to that network via Istanbul.

Boost to Edinburgh Airport’s premium offering

Edinburgh International Airport said the new lounge enhances its premium passenger facilities and reflects growing demand for higher-quality travel experiences. The airport has been expanding its international route network and non-aeronautical services as passenger volumes recover and grow.

Edinburgh International Airport Chief Commercial Officer Stephanie Wear said: “The opening of the new Turkish Airlines Lounge marks an exciting chapter for both us and the airline as they launch their first lounge in the Europe abroad at Edinburgh Airport. It demonstrates Turkish Airlines’ commitment to the airport and to enhancing the travel experience for passengers. Open to all travellers, the lounge offers a relaxing space with fantastic runway views and some great food and beverage options whilst you wait for your flight.”

Access to the lounge is available to Turkish Airlines Business Class passengers, Miles&Smiles Elite, Elite Plus and Elite Corporate Club members travelling in any class, and holders of the airline’s Miles&Smiles Premier Visa Signature Card issued in the United States. Passengers with a paid lounge membership card can also use the facility prior to departure.

The opening reflects a broader trend among global airlines to invest in branded lounge experiences beyond their home hubs, particularly in markets with strong premium and long-haul demand. For Edinburgh Airport, the presence of a dedicated Turkish Airlines lounge adds to its portfolio of airline-operated and third-party lounges, offering more choice to travellers.

Turkish Airlines currently operates 10 weekly flights between Edinburgh and Istanbul, providing a direct link between Scotland and Türkiye. Through Istanbul, passengers can connect onward to destinations across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, leveraging the airline’s position as the carrier flying to more countries than any other.
