The incidents occurred following Carnival parades and parties in multiple towns, with victims including a 15-year-old boy and a 55-year-old man who were seriously wounded in separate altercations. Authorities report that suspects have been identified or arrested in connection with each attack, while federal police imposed temporary weapons bans at key railway stations to deter further violence.
Knife attacks reported near Carnival events in multiple towns
In Leverkusen-Schlebusch, a 15-year-old boy was stabbed during a dispute at a Carnival party following a local parade. Police said the teenager suffered a severe arterial wound to his thigh and required emergency surgery. He was later reported to be out of life-threatening danger, and a suspect has been identified as investigations continue.
Another serious stabbing took place in Havixbeck, where a 55-year-old man was attacked after Carnival festivities. The victim was taken to hospital with severe injuries and later stabilized. Authorities confirmed that a suspect who initially fled the scene was subsequently arrested, with homicide detectives overseeing the case.
A third knife incident was reported in Grefrath, where a 20-year-old man was stabbed in a parking area near a Carnival celebration venue. Police arrested a 16-year-old suspect on suspicion of attempted murder. Two other individuals were briefly detained for questioning before being released.
Security tightened at transport hubs during peak Carnival travel
In response to the attacks and the heavy movement of revelers across the region, Germany’s federal police introduced temporary weapons-ban zones at 15 major railway stations in North Rhine-Westphalia. The measures allow officers to conduct random checks for knives and other dangerous items without prior suspicion.
Authorities said the controls are designed to reduce the risk of violent incidents during one of the busiest periods of domestic travel in Germany. Carnival season draws millions of participants each year, particularly to cities such as Cologne, Düsseldorf, and surrounding towns, with parades, street parties, and late-night events continuing for several days.
