Riga–Vilnius Train Celebrates Lithuania’s Iconic Summer Dish

The Riga–Vilnius train now offers more than scenic cross-border views—it delivers a full-on cultural and culinary celebration aboard the newly launched Pink Soup Train. This specially themed carriage honors one of Lithuania’s iconic summer dishes, cold beetroot soup, or šaltibarščiai, known for its vibrant pink color and refreshing flavor.

All Aboard the Pink Soup Train

A collaboration between LTG Link, Lithuania’s national railway company, and Go Vilnius, the capital’s tourism agency, the Pink Soup Train is a summer travel initiative designed to immerse passengers in Lithuanian food culture. One of the train’s three carriages has been transformed into a whimsical space with pink décor, playful details, and summer-inspired visuals—all celebrating the beloved dish.

The Pink Soup Train operates on the Riga–Vilnius–Riga route from now until August 10. Travelers can book standard or themed carriage tickets via the LTG Link website and mobile app. The themed carriage is clearly labeled as the “Pink Soup Train” during booking, with tickets priced at 20 euros.

Kristina Meidė, CEO of LTG Link, said the initiative reflects the company’s mission to promote eco-friendly travel while celebrating Lithuania’s culinary heritage. “We encourage travelers from Latvia to visit Vilnius by train—an environmentally friendly, convenient, and increasingly popular mode of transportation,” she stated.

Countdown to the Vilnius Pink Soup Fest

The Pink Soup Train also serves as a colorful prelude to the annual Vilnius Pink Soup Fest, set for May 31. Now in its third year, the festival is expected to draw thousands of visitors from across the Baltic region. In 2023, it welcomed 7,000 international guests, and organizers are confident the themed train will boost attendance even further.

The event offers a full day of vibrant, family-friendly activities in the city center, highlighting creativity, cuisine, and culture. Key attractions include:

  • The Pink Soup Parade – A festive procession through Vilnius celebrating the dish
  • Themed Costume Contest – Attendees dress in bold pink outfits for a shot at top prizes
  • Pink Waiters’ Marathon – A crowd favorite where servers race in full uniform carrying soup

Beyond its eye-catching fun, the festival represents a deeper celebration of community, food heritage, and tourism in Lithuania’s capital.

A Cultural Dish on the Move

Cold beetroot soup has long been a summer staple in Lithuania, cherished for its refreshing taste and unmistakable appearance. Made with beets, kefir, cucumbers, dill, and sometimes boiled eggs or potatoes, šaltibarščiai reflects the country’s love of fresh, seasonal ingredients.

According to Eglė Girdzijauskaitė, Head of Communications at Go Vilnius, “Cold beetroot soup is more than just food—it’s an important summer tradition in this region.” She emphasized that this year’s campaign aims to inspire travelers from Latvia and beyond to experience Vilnius through the lens of this cherished dish.

Tickets, Travel, and More

The Pink Soup Train runs throughout the summer, giving travelers several weeks to enjoy this unique ride. Booking is simple through LTG Link’s platforms, and passengers can choose between the themed or standard carriages.
