Inside the $20M Bezos Sanchez Venetian Wedding: Guests, Protests, and Yacht Parties

Venice has seen its fair share of celebrity weddings, but few have captured global attention like the ongoing nuptial spectacle of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and former news anchor and pilot Lauren Sánchez. As of June 24, 2025, the couple’s multi-day celebration is officially underway—anchored in the opulence of Italy’s floating city and sailing through waves of fanfare, protest, and press.

The wedding, reportedly costing upwards of $20 million, is expected to span several days from June 26 to an unspecified date, although some reports have claimed the wedding could take place from June 26 to 29. Preparations have transformed parts of Venice’s historic center into a high-security, high-glamour event space. With yachts, exclusive venues, and a guest list studded with A-listers, the event marks one of the most high-profile gatherings in Europe this year.

Superyachts and Secret Venues

At the heart of the celebration is Bezos’s $500 million, 417-foot superyacht Koru, now docked just offshore. The couple hosted a pre-wedding foam party aboard the vessel over the weekend to mark Sánchez’s son’s 19th birthday. Though not officially part of the wedding, the event set the tone for what’s to come.

The actual ceremony is rumored to take place either aboard the yacht or at the stunning Scuola Grande della Misericordia, a 16th-century Renaissance hall previously used for George and Amal Clooney’s Venice wedding. The nearby island of San Giorgio Maggiore is also in the spotlight, with sources suggesting it may host parts of the reception.

Who’s on the Guest List?

Roughly 200–250 guests are expected to attend, including a who’s who of tech moguls, celebrities, and philanthropists. Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, Kim Kardashian, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Katy Perry are just some of the names reportedly spotted or invited.

Venetian luxury hotels like Aman Venice, Cipriani, and Gritti Palace have been quietly booked out, and reports say dozens of water taxis have been chartered to ferry guests discreetly to different venues. According to Page Six, even Hollywood stylists and bridal dress designers have been seen arriving ahead of the main event.

Venice Reacts: Glamour Meets Resistance

While some Venetians welcome the international spotlight and economic boost, others are less thrilled. Local activists have launched a campaign called “No Space for Bezos”, plastering posters across Venice’s historic center. Protesters claim the wedding reflects the excesses of over-tourism and billionaire privilege that threaten the city’s delicate ecosystem and culture.

Environmental group Greenpeace also made their presence felt with a bold banner in St. Mark’s Square urging Bezos to “Pay Your Taxes.” In response, city officials stressed that the event is privately managed and that public access to most areas will remain unaffected. Only about 30 water taxis have been reserved for the wedding, they say, and standard transportation services will continue operating.

Despite the pushback, Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro described the wedding as a “once-in-a-generation showcase” for the city, noting that most of the wedding services—caterers, decorators, musicians—are sourced locally. From Murano glass favors to traditional Venetian pastries from Rosa Salva, the event is expected to inject a significant amount of money into the local economy.

A Symbolic and Spectacular Union

For Bezos and Sánchez, the choice of Venice seems symbolic. The city, like their relationship, has endured scrutiny and admiration in equal measure. Their journey from public courtship to yacht-borne luxury has played out under a spotlight—one they’ve embraced with style and intention.

Dress speculation is in full swing, with Sánchez reportedly eyeing custom creations by Oscar de la Renta, with fittings in Milan and styling advice from none other than Anna Wintour. As for Bezos, his focus remains on privacy, perfection, and pulling off an event that fuses romance, legacy, and elite celebration.

The world will be watching Venice this week—not just for the glitz and glamour, but for what the event says about wealth, tourism, and tradition in the 21st century.

What Travelers Need to Know in Venice This Week

If you’re visiting Venice between June 24 and 26, you may find the city even more lively—and at times, a bit chaotic. While most wedding events are private and isolated to select venues, travelers should be aware of potential disruptions in certain areas.

Expect temporary closures or crowding near San Giorgio Maggiore, Scuola Grande della Misericordia, and waterfront areas near Punta della Dogana and the Arsenale, where paparazzi and curious onlookers are gathering. Water taxi traffic may be higher than usual, so plan ahead if you’re heading to the islands or using vaporetti for day trips.

Security presence is heightened in luxury hotel zones such as Aman Venice and Cipriani. You may spot celebrities—or the barriers meant to keep them shielded. While these high-profile events can affect mobility, they also offer a rare chance to witness how Venice adapts to the world’s spotlight.

Looking for a quiet escape? Consider visiting the Dorsoduro district, Giudecca island, or taking a scenic ferry ride to Burano and Torcello, where the wedding noise won’t follow. And if you’re hoping to spot the famous Koru yacht, keep an eye out from the Riva degli Schiavoni promenade—it’s currently anchored just offshore.

In short: pack some patience, charge your camera, and enjoy a front-row seat to one of the most talked-about weddings of the year—whether you’re on the guest list or just lucky to be in town.
