American Airlines expects to fly 75 million passengers in its biggest summer ever

American Airlines expects to carry 75 million passengers across 750,000 flights this summer, making it the largest and busiest schedule in the carrier’s 100-year history. The summer travel period runs from 21 May through 8 September 2026.

The figures surpass the airline’s previous record set in 2019. American will launch the season with Memorial Day weekend, when it expects more than 4.2 million customers across 40,000 flights between 21 and 26 May, with Friday 22 May forecast as the most-travelled day of that period.

The airline has prepared for the surge by completing offseason maintenance on its fleet, upgrading facilities and increasing staffing at key locations. It has also introduced operational changes at its major hubs ahead of the peak period.

At Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, its largest hub, American rolled out a new 13-bank schedule that has already reduced delays, cut customer misconnects and improved baggage handling performance. The carrier says customer satisfaction scores rose in the schedule’s first month.

At Philadelphia International Airport, a redesigned afternoon schedule for transatlantic departures is intended to ease congestion and improve on-time performance. American is also adding two new transatlantic routes from Philadelphia this summer: service to Budapest, Hungary, and Prague, Czech Republic.

Three additional long-haul routes are launching from other hubs: Dallas Fort Worth to Athens, Greece, and Zurich, Switzerland, and Miami to Milan, Italy.

Figures include 750,000 flights, 75 million customers, 5 flights and 500 customers departing every minute, and 17 July as the most-travelled day with nearly 7,000 departures. “From the way we’ve restructured our hubs to the investments we’ve made in scheduling, our more than 130,000 team members have built an operation that’s not only reliable and resilient, but ready for the summer peak demand,” said David Seymour, Chief Operating Officer at American Airlines. “It’s an operation built with our customers in mind and one we look forward to delivering for the millions of customers counting on us this summer.”

At Chicago O’Hare International Airport, American expects to welcome more than 5.2 million passengers this summer, an 11% increase on 2025 and 48% higher than 2023. The Federal Aviation Administration has brought flight schedules at the airport back within its operational capacity, which American says will deliver a more predictable service.

The airline has also introduced a range of passenger-facing improvements for the season. New digital tools in the American app explain the reasons behind delays and cancellations and offer self-service options including rebooking, bag tracking and digital vouchers.

Free Wi-Fi, sponsored by AT&T, is now available to all AAdvantage members on nearly every American flight. Samsung Wallet boarding passes are also available, marking what the airline describes as an industry first.

TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is now live at 60 airports, including all of American’s hubs. The opt-in programme removes the need to present identification at the security checkpoint. Travellers aged 30 and under can save $20 on TSA PreCheck during May.

A One Stop Security programme is now active on all flights between Dallas Fort Worth and London Heathrow, allowing connecting passengers to proceed without reclaiming baggage or passing through additional screening.

“This summer is an exciting milestone for American as we plan to welcome a record number of customers during our centennial year,” said Heather Garboden, Chief Customer Officer at American Airlines. “From free Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members, sponsored by AT&T, to tools that give customers greater clarity and control when plans change to a more seamless security experience and technology that has saved tens of thousands of connections, we’re investing in a smoother, more connected travel experience for everyone flying with us this summer.”

American’s busiest single day this summer will be 17 July, with 6,995 flights scheduled. At peak, the airline will operate approximately five flights every minute throughout the season.
