EDITION Hotels to make Africa debut in Cape Town

Marriott International has confirmed that its EDITION Hotels brand will make its Africa debut with the opening of The Cape Town EDITION at the V&A Waterfront in 2026.

The project, announced on Dec. 18, 2025, is being developed in partnership with V&A Waterfront Holdings and will introduce the design-led luxury brand to the continent for the first time.

The Cape Town EDITION will feature 142 guest rooms and suites, multiple dining venues including a signature rooftop bar, and a spa, pool, and meeting facilities. Plans also include six private residences branded as The Residences at The Cape Town EDITION, positioning the development as a combined hotel and lifestyle destination within one of Africa’s most visited tourism precincts.

A milestone debut for EDITION Hotels in Africa

Marriott described the agreement as a strategic milestone in its growth across the Middle East and Africa. Karim Cheltout, Senior Vice President – Development, Middle East & Africa at Marriott International, said: “The signing of our first EDITION Hotel in Africa marks a significant milestone for the company’s growth strategy in the continent. Cape Town is a city that embodies creativity, diversity, and a dynamic spirit – qualities that align perfectly with the brand’s ethos.”

Cheltout also highlighted the importance of the location, adding: “The V&A Waterfront is an iconic location, and we are confident that this project will set a new standard for luxury hospitality in the market.” The selection of Cape Town reflects both the city’s established appeal to international travellers and Marriott’s confidence in long-term tourism demand.

The EDITION brand is known for combining contemporary design, understated luxury and a strong sense of place. Properties typically focus on curated social spaces, distinctive food and beverage concepts and architecture-led interiors, rather than traditional large-scale luxury hotel formats. Marriott said the Cape Town property will reflect the city’s heritage and cosmopolitan energy while maintaining the brand’s global identity.

Design responsibility for The Cape Town EDITION and its associated residences has been awarded to Shanghai-based architectural firm Neri & Hu, working in collaboration with local architecture and design studio StudioMAS. The project aims to blend modern, refined aesthetics with local character, a core principle of the EDITION brand globally.

In addition to hotel accommodation, the development will include The Residences at The Cape Town EDITION, comprising six private homes. These residences are intended to mirror the hotel’s design philosophy, offering a mix of contemporary luxury and restrained simplicity, and are positioned as a new benchmark for branded residential living in the city.

The V&A Waterfront as a global tourism anchor

The Cape Town EDITION will be located within the V&A Waterfront, one of the Southern Hemisphere’s oldest working harbours and among the most visited destinations in Africa. Set at the edge of the planned Granger Bay development, the property is expected to offer views across the Atlantic Ocean, the City Bowl and several of Cape Town’s best-known landmarks, including Table Mountain, Lion’s Head and Signal Hill.

The wider V&A Waterfront precinct plays a central role in Cape Town’s tourism economy. It hosts year-round events at its amphitheatre, features Battery Park and a world-class heliport, and offers extensive yacht berths, including facilities for superyachts. The area is also home to a broad mix of dining, retail and leisure experiences, making it a focal point for both visitors and residents.

David Green, Chief Executive Officer of the V&A Waterfront, said the project would further strengthen the precinct’s global profile. “We are excited to be developing this architecturally stunning new building which will mark the launch of EDITION Hotels in Africa. Cape Town is privileged to join only a select number of markets in the world with an EDITION Hotel,” he said.

Green also pointed to broader travel trends supporting the investment. “We are witnessing growing tourism demand in the city, and The Cape Town EDITION will offer guests a plethora of destination-led experiences and direct access to the world’s leading luxury retail brands, top-class restaurants, charter cruises and other incredible experiences,” he added.

Guests and residents at the new development will also benefit from a newly developed public promenade along the water’s edge, designed to provide seamless pedestrian access through the precinct. This connection is intended to integrate the hotel more closely with the surrounding destination rather than operate as a standalone resort.

The arrival of EDITION Hotels in Cape Town reflects a broader trend of high-end brands targeting established urban leisure destinations rather than traditional resort-only locations. For Cape Town, the project reinforces its position as a leading global tourism city, capable of attracting international hotel brands that prioritise design, lifestyle and place-driven experiences.

With the opening planned for 2026, The Cape Town EDITION is expected to add a new layer to the city’s luxury accommodation offering. For Marriott, it represents a strategic entry point for EDITION in Africa; for Cape Town, it signals continued confidence in long-term tourism growth anchored by its most recognisable waterfront district.
