Historic trains return to Lombardy this spring, with scenic journeys linking Milan to lakes and mountains as part of a renewed push for slow and sustainable tourism. The 2026 season begins on 29 March with the “Besanino Express”, departing Milano Centrale at 09.25 and travelling through Brianza to Lecco, arriving at 11.38.
The initiative is promoted by Regione Lombardia’s Department of Transport and Sustainable Mobility together with Fondazione FS Italiane, FS Treni Turistici Italiani and Ferrovie Nord. The programme is supported by an annual regional investment of around €600,000, including approximately €300,000 dedicated specifically to historic train operations.
The inaugural “Besanino Express” journey offers one of the most scenic rail experiences in northern Italy. After leaving Milan, the train stops in Monza before continuing along a historic panoramic line towards Molteno, passing hills, small towns and natural landscapes before reaching Lecco on the shores of Lake Como. The inaugural journey is already sold out but there are more journeys Fondazione FS offers.
The return journey departs Lecco at 17.15, arriving back in Milan at 19.25. The route partly follows a historic railway line that once connected Milan to Brianza, recreating a journey from another era with restored vintage carriages and period locomotives.
The Besanino Express marks the start of a wider 2026 calendar featuring more than 20 itineraries running between spring and autumn. All routes depart from Milan and connect travellers to some of Lombardy’s most popular destinations, combining cultural heritage with scenic landscapes.
Among the highlights is the tourist line linking Palazzolo to Paratico Sarnico, offering access to Lake Iseo. Other routes include destinations such as Como, Laveno Mombello, Cremona and Mortara, providing a mix of lakeside, mountain and historic city experiences.
The trains themselves are a key part of the attraction. Historic services are operated using steam or vintage electric locomotives and restored carriages that retain original interiors and design features, offering passengers an immersive travel experience.
One of the most iconic trains featured in the programme is the ETR 252 “Arlecchino”, a symbol of Italian rail design from the economic boom years. Known for its elegant shape and large panoramic windows, it remains a standout example of 20th-century engineering and style.
According to Regione Lombardia, rail plays a strategic role in developing more sustainable and inclusive tourism. Historic train journeys are designed to appeal to all ages, from younger travellers discovering a different way to travel to those seeking to relive the atmosphere of classic rail journeys.
Tickets for the historic train services are available through Trenitalia sales channels, including ticket offices, the official website and mobile app. Updated information on schedules and routes can be found on the official platforms of Fondazione FS and Treni Turistici Italiani.
