American Airlines to Fly JFK–Edinburgh with Its New A321XLR Jet

American Airlines will launch a new nonstop route between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Edinburgh, Scotland (EDI), starting March 8, 2026.

The seasonal service will operate until October 24, 2026, using the airline’s newest long-range narrow-body aircraft, the Airbus A321XLR. Tickets for the route go on sale November 3 on aa.com and through the American Airlines mobile app.

The route marks the carrier’s first direct connection between New York and Edinburgh, adding to American’s growing transatlantic network and reinforcing its commitment to Scotland following a successful launch of flights from Philadelphia earlier in 2025. The new service will provide U.S. travelers greater access to Scotland’s capital and the nearby Highlands, while giving Scottish passengers enhanced connectivity to the United States and beyond via JFK.

Expanded Access to Scotland

American Airlines’ Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning, Brian Znotins, said the decision reflects rising demand for leisure and business travel between the two destinations. “After a successful summer in Edinburgh, American is excited to offer a second route to give travelers more access to one of their favorite destinations,” said Znotins. “With the game-changing Airbus A321XLR now in our fleet, we could not be more excited to connect the Big Apple with Auld Reekie. This is the right aircraft to open this route and with an elevated premium experience for travelers to enjoy.”

Edinburgh remains one of Europe’s most popular destinations for U.S. tourists, known for its historic Old Town, literary heritage, and proximity to Scotland’s renowned golf courses and landscapes. The route will also cater to the growing number of business travelers flying between the U.S. East Coast and Scotland’s expanding corporate and tech sectors.

In addition to the JFK–Edinburgh service, American will continue its seasonal flights between Philadelphia (PHL) and Edinburgh in 2026, operating from March 28 through October 24 with a Boeing 787-8. The two U.S. gateways will complement each other to provide more schedule options and seamless transatlantic access. Through its Atlantic Joint Business partnership with British Airways, American customers can also connect from Edinburgh to destinations across England, Italy, and Spain.

Inside the A321XLR: Comfort and Efficiency

The Airbus A321XLR represents a milestone for American Airlines as the first U.S. carrier to introduce this new aircraft type. The jet features a three-class layout with 20 Flagship Suite® seats, 12 Premium Economy seats, and 123 Main Cabin seats. Each seat includes high-speed Wi-Fi, Bluetooth-enabled entertainment, and access to USB and power outlets.

The Flagship Suite® offers lie-flat seats with direct aisle access and wireless charging, while Premium Economy provides wider seats with calf and footrests. All passengers will enjoy complimentary hot meals and beverages, with menus that rotate monthly to highlight regional flavors.

The A321XLR is designed for greater fuel efficiency, offering transatlantic range with up to 30% lower fuel burn compared to previous-generation aircraft. Its arrival enables American to expand into medium-sized European markets such as Edinburgh while maintaining operational sustainability and flexibility.

Before launching on the Scotland route, the A321XLR will debut on American’s domestic service between New York (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX) starting December 18, 2025. The aircraft will operate that route through March 2026 before transitioning to international use. As American takes delivery of more A321XLRs, the airline plans to deploy the aircraft on additional transcontinental and long-haul routes.

With the addition of the JFK–Edinburgh route, American Airlines will operate seven new transatlantic routes for summer 2026, including services to Budapest, Prague, and other European destinations. The expansion underlines the airline’s strategy to grow its presence in Europe while offering travelers more flexibility and comfort across its network.
